Vertical University

The Vertical University explores two core concepts: the use of discreet building envelopes for enclosed spaces, rather than a more traditional unifying or homogeneous envelope; and the implementation of a central dividing corridor between occupiable facades that acts as a public, exterior mediating space between dormitory and classroom.  The floor plates, acting as the surfaces of this public mediator, span between facades providing direct connection between the dormitory and classroom, while also remaining "unprogrammed". The west-facing facade houses the dormitory units of the university, while the east-facing facade contains the classrooms. The central figure and it's disruption of either facade is necessitated by programmatic needs, and weaves back and forth between sides supplying ample floor area for various tertiary programs.
